The department of cardiology deals with disorders and diseases of heart. Cardiological ailments
  • Coronary heart disease (CAD): In coronary heart disease, the flow of blood to the muscle of heart is decreased. It occurs because of generation and accumulation of plaque in arteries. Its symptoms are pain in the heart and shortness of breath. Its risk factors include smoking, diabetes, not exercising, high blood pressure and blood cholesterol.
  • Valvular heart disease: In valvular heart disease, abnormalities related to the valves of heart occur. Valvular heart disease can be divided into aortic stenosis, mitral stenosis, aortic regurgitation, mitral regurgitation, and tricuspid regurgitation. Symptoms vary with the type of valvular heart disease. Its symptoms include shortness of breath, pain in chest, passing, and lightheadedness.
  • Congenital heart defect (CHD): In CHD, an abnormality in heart’s structure or the structure of the great vessels is observed at the time of birth. The symptoms vary according to the type of the defect. The most common symptoms are bluish skin, difficulty in gaining weight, tiredness, and rapid breathing.

    Some types of congenital heart defects are as follows:
    • Coarctation of the aorta
    • D-transposition of the great arteries
    • Ebstein’s anomaly
    • Single ventricle defects
    • Complete atrioventricular canal defect (CAVC)
  • Heart failure: In heart failure or cardiac failure, the heart is not able to pump blood properly according to the body’s need. Its symptoms include swollen leg, tiredness, and shortness of breath. It can be caused by several factors such as occurrence of heart attack, abnormality in heart rhythm, overconsumption of alcohol, infection, and damage to the heart.
