Contact Lens

What is it?

A Contact Lens is a thin plastic lens that is placed right above the eye in order to correct a patient’s vision. There are different types of contact lens available, depending on the medical condition of the eyes.

Types of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are typically differentiated into the following main categories,

  • Soft Contact Lens is the most commonly used contact lens and they come in the following types,
    • Daily wear lenses are those lenses that can be worn during the day and have to be removed at night. Then they have to be placed in a lens solution in order to clean and disinfect them. These are the least expensive lens and can be used for a long period of time depending on the manufacturer.
    • Extended wear lenses are those lenses that can be used while sleeping. It is recommended to remove these lenses for cleaning and disinfecting them at least once a week to prevent the patient’s eyes from getting infections.
    • Disposable lenses, as the name suggests, are lenses that can be disposed of after they have been used for a particular time period. Disposable lenses cost more and should not be used regularly as they are not cleaned or disinfected compared to other types of lenses.
  • Hard Contact Lenses, also known as gas-permeable lenses, are rigid gas-permeable lenses that provide clear vision for most eye problems. Hard contact lenses are more breathable compared to soft contact lenses leading to reduced dry-eyes and infections. These lenses should be removed at night to disinfected and cleaned after wearing them during the day. Adapting to the hard contact lens takes more time when compared to the softer ones.
  • Toric Contact Lenses help correct astigmatism. These lenses can be found in both rigid and soft materials.

Some of the other types of contact lenses available are:

  • Pediatric Contact Lenses are contact lenses recommended for children with corneal irregularities or other vision problems that will help with better vision and comfort.

Contact Lens Trial is the first contact lens fitting done in order to make sure the lens rests properly on the eye as well as to note any discomfort caused by the lens.

Disorders Treated

Contact lenses are used for treating the following vision problems,

  • Nearsightedness is also known as myopia.
  • Farsightedness can also be termed as hyperopia.
  • Presbyopia is nearsightedness caused by old age.
  • Astigmatism causes blurred vision.
  • Therapeutic Lenses (BCL) required for corneal irregularities.
  • Cosmetic Lenses such as colored contact lens to change the color of the eyes.

Lens Care

  • Contact lenses must be cleaned and disinfected after removing them to kill germs and prevent infections.
  • Wash your hands with soap before wearing the lens.
  • Do not share your lenses with others.
