ENT Surgery

What is it?

ENT, also known as Otorhinolaryngology, is a branch of science that deals with the study of the medical conditions that affect the ear, nose, and throat.

In our everyday lives, we use our ears, nose, and throat for different purposes. The human ear is not only used for hearing but also for a sense of balance, whereas the nose provides a sense of taste along with the sense of smell. Besides breathing, our nose performs important functions like preventing germs from entering the body, as well as, humidifying the air we breathe in.

Lastly, the function of the throat is to provide safe passage of air into the lungs, as well as, food and water into the digestive tract. The throat also contains thyroid and parathyroid glands.

ENT Medical Issues

An ENT department deals with a variety of disorders affecting the ear, nose, and throat. Some of these disorders are as follows,

  • Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils caused by common cold, strep throat etc. Tonsillitis leads to severe throat pain.
  • Ear Infections can cause hearing problems, pain etc.
  • Sinus Infection, also known as sinusitis, can be caused by either bacteria or virus. The symptoms include headache, difficulty breathing etc.
  • Sleep Apnea is the breathing difficulty usually experienced while asleep. It is a serious condition that may result in heart failure, depression, etc., if left treated.
  • Blocked Airway is a condition with different causes such as stenosis, malformation of the larynx, tracheomalacia and vocal cord paralysis.

Treatment

The different treatment options provided for the disorders of the ear, nose, and throat are as follows,

  • Balloon Sinuplasty is a procedure to treat sinusitis where a small, flexible, balloon-like catheter is inserted into the sinus passage where the balloon catheter is slowly inflated to enlarge the opening of the sinus.
  • Laryngotracheal Reconstruction Surgery is performed on those patients with blocked airways. In this procedure, cartilage is inserted into the narrowed section of the trachea to prevent blockage of air.
  • Cochlear Implants are electronic devices used for treating patients with hearing problems associated with the inner ear. These implants will partially increase hearing but it cannot restore complete hearing ability.
  • Medications are usually prescribed for treating infections affecting the ear, nose or throat depending on the cause and severity of the infections. For bacterial infections, antibiotics are prescribed.
  • Tonsillitis is treated with the help of medications as well as surgery. For bacterial tonsillitis, antibiotics are prescribed. Tonsillectomy is the surgical method performed if the tonsillitis is chronic, recurrent or if antibiotics do not treat tonsillitis.
  • Sleep apnea is treated with the help of,
    • Lifestyle changes,
